It is oft-repeated that the climate change has an impact on the agricultural and livestock productivity, factors such as erosion, floods and drought affect negatively agricultural production. Thus, protecting the environment and addressing climate change impacts are prerequisites for the successful development of agriculture or food security. Overall, the common key environmental and climate change issues in Burundi and other EAC countries include: land degradation, deforestation, dependency on biomass for fuel, soil, water and air pollution, a lack of environment-friendly transport systems, vulnerability of natural ecosystems, lack of low-carbon materials for housing and green infrastructure development, inadequate waste treatment for both solid and liquid waste, increase of industrial and wastes, limited coordination in environmental and climate change governance, among others

Promoting the access of adaptative energy to rural households
Energy and environmental problems are closely related, since it is nearly impossible to produce, or consume energy without significant environmental impact.
ERB contributes to reducing the effects of deforestation and improving the well-being of low-income households through three actions related to energy access:
1. Clay stoves/saving stoves
Many rural households make food with wood and charcoal which provoke the deforestation and erosion. Then, the saving stoves or improved stoves shall contribute to the reduction of deforestation. As well as, kitchen smoke from traditional cooking over fire cause some diseases.
2. Energy produced by biomass
Biomass can be derived from forestry wastes such as residues of the trees and shrubs, energy and any agricultural residues. It can be used for heating, electricity generation, and transport fuels. ERB is helping the smallholders to use this source of energy
3. Solar energy is that produced by the Sun's light:
Solar photovoltaic systems are the most common type of solar energy system that produces electricity directly from sunlight. In partnership with the suppliers of energy solar facilities, ERB wants to support middle-income rural families to have access to this source of energy
Approaches of the Program
The Community-Based Disaster Risk Management approach ( CBDRM)
The Community-Based Disaster Risk Management approach is used to enable households and communities to be resilient against both hunger and the negative effects of climate change. The latter approach is recent in Burundi and ERB has been using it in the implementation of rural resilience projects since 2019. This approach provides six main steps for household and community resilience:
- Participatory disaster risk assessment;
- Prioritization of disaster threats with a particular focus on elements at risk;
- Mapping of local vulnerabilities and capacities
- Development of plans (development and contingency)
- Support of households and communities in the implementation of the development and mitigation plans
- Knowledge: exchange of experiences and lessons learned
